A Carl has always been at the head of the Ellingen Castle Brewery: The traditional name is passed down from father to son and goes back to Field Marshal Carl Philipp Prince von Wrede. Although he did not brew beer himself, he was the first owner of the Teutonic Order Castle in Ellingen belonging to the von Wrede family.

From Carl to Carl

The first Prince Carl originally came from Heidelberg. When he received the Ellingen Castle for his services as a royal throne and fief from King Max I Joseph, Carl Philipp Prince von Wrede moved to Bavaria. To honor the forefather of their family for his courage and bravery, from then on every firstborn in the family was called Carl. The brewery in the Teutonic Order Castle in Ellingen has been around since 1690, but the princely von Wrede family only held the sceptre from 1815. Since then the brewery has been extensively modernized and equipped with the latest technology. Today you can experience the brewing process live on site, enjoy the finest beer and homemade specialties in the brewery rooms, in summer you can take a wonderful rest in the shady beer garden and you can ride in a carriage or on the toboggan run. The company is managed by the sixth and seventh generation of the princely von Wrede family: His Serene Highness Carl Friedrich Prince von Wrede, together with His Princely Grace Carl Christian Prince von Wrede and Her Princely Grace Katalin Princess von Wrede, head the umbrella brand Fürst Carl.

Princely beer from Ellingen

The Ellingen Castle Brewery looks back on a centuries-old brewing tradition and combines the wealth of knowledge of many generations of brewers with the latest technology and innovation. Excellent beers are produced by hand in the magnificent copper brewhouse. The raw materials are hand-picked and come from regional cultivation: hops and barley are grown by Franconian farmers, the brewing water is drawn from the brewery's own well and the yeast is a strain that has been used for generations. The beers in Fürst Carl's wide range are classic styles with a modern touch and seasonal specialties such as the Josefi Bock . The princely family is very committed to the region and their Franconian homeland. At various events, Fürst Carl celebrates beer as a cultural asset and the preservation of our ancient culinary traditions.
