Drinks made from fermented apple juice have a long tradition in all parts of the world where there are apple trees. While people in Germany have been drinking apple wine for centuries, people in France drink cider and in Great Britain (and all former colonial states) they drink cider. It is believed that Celtic tribes were already making a type of cider in the third millennium BC and the success story of the apple drink continues to this day.
Traditionally, cider consists exclusively of apples, which are mashed and fermented using the wild yeast that clings to the apple skins. Sometimes a little yeast is added to the mixture. Modern interpretations of the specialty can also contain other types of fruit such as pears, cherries or wild berries , or can be mixed with spices. Unlike beer production, cider production is not subject to strict rules. There are no limits to your imagination. One company that has had a significant influence on the popularity of cider over the last decade is Somersby. The subsidiary of the Danish brewing empire Carlsberg was founded in 2008 and has since grown into one of the largest producers of the apple sparkling wine. Originally only intended to serve the Danish market, Somersby Cider is now sold in more than 45 countries worldwide.
It all started with an apple cider, but today there are almost 20 different varieties, revolving around all kinds of fruit and combinations thereof. A few years ago, the manufacturer even started bringing out seasonal ciders. One extremely popular cider, for example, is the Somersby Winter Cider , which appears on supermarket and beverage store shelves every year just in time for the start of the unpleasant, cold season. The Winter Cider is a classic apple sparkling wine that has been given a festive glow with cinnamon. The warm spice harmonizes wonderfully with the fresh sweetness and mild acidity of the apple. The pairing reminds us of grandma's apple pie, apple fritters fried in beer batter, semolina pudding with apple sauce, cinnamon and sugar, and delicious apple strudel. You can enjoy the winter cider at room temperature or on ice, but you can also use it to make a wonderful hot drink.
No matter whether cider is already part of your repertoire of favorite drinks or you have never heard of it, Somersby is a good place to stock up on the fine apple sparkling wine and get to know its many facets!
