Winter is fast approaching and with it comes rain, snow, cold, mud, fog and darkness. The only bright spots in this time of year are the seasonal specialties that are now springing up like mushrooms. The first Stollen, gingerbread and chocolate Santas were already on supermarket shelves in August, and now Bock and Christmas beers, mulled wine and other delicacies are slowly being added.
The Somersby cider manufacturer also contributes a treat to the buffet: their Somersby Winter Cider is a sparkling apple wine that has been mixed with winter spices. The drink combines the soft sweetness and gentle acidity of freshly pressed apples with the warm spice of cinnamon. The highlight is that the cider can be enjoyed both ice-cold and hot. With a dash of Amaretto and a dollop of cream, you can conjure up a wonderful alternative to mulled wine. The cider has a good 4.5% alcohol content in the glass and goes well with both sweet and savory dishes.
If we fancy something hearty, we combine the winter cider with cheese spaetzle: hand-grated spaetzle with mountain cheese, fried onions and a little chives harmonize wonderfully with the fresh apple sweetness. Oven-fresh cinnamon rolls with icing and sugar or apple fritters in beer batter also taste excellent with it.
