Stauder

The Stauder Brewery looks back on more than 150 years of history. The family history is closely linked to the company, as the brewery has been family-owned from the very beginning.

How the bottom-fermented beer from Bavaria found its way to Essen

It all began with one courageous man. Theodor Stauder, a cooper and brewer, left Bavaria in the 1860s and settled in Essen. He brought with him a brewing method that had never before arrived in the North Rhine-Westphalian city: Theodor rented space in a microbrewery and brewed bottom-fermented beer. The brand-new beer was very well received by the citizens of Essen and helped Theodor and his young brewery establish a good reputation in his adopted hometown. Six years later, Theodor moved his residence and his brewery to Altessen. At that time, what is now a district of Essen was still a separate city. Theodor and his son Jacob opened their brewery there, laying the foundation for the Stauder Brewery. Bruckmannstraße – the site of the then and current brewery – was renamed Stauderstraße in honor of the family business's 100th anniversary. Jacob follows in his father's footsteps and takes the company a major step forward: He purchases the previously rented land and registers the brewery. Under his leadership, the business is modernized and expanded, and he and his wife Katharina also run a farm and an inn. Over the course of the next century, the brewery's fortunes are passed from family member to family member – and today, cousins Axel and Dr. Thomas Stauder represent the sixth generation of the Stauder family at the helm.

Stauder stands for quality, sustainability, craftsmanship and taste

The Stauder Brewery team is comprised of 145 members. This large brewery family not only brews beer every day, but also pursues a shared mission. Following the motto "Honest. Down-to-earth. Locally connected," the people behind Stauder work every day to brew the highest quality beer that builds community and supports the region. Authenticity plays just as important a role as the selection of excellent raw materials, state-of-the-art brewing technology, a long maturation period, and resource-efficient processes. A comprehensive sustainability concept includes the reusable principle, the agricultural use of waste products from the brewing process, solar energy, and the economical and sustainable use of water. Stauder stands for outstanding quality beer, produced by hand. Brews like the popular Premium Pils combine state-of-the-art production with sustainable concepts and exquisite taste.
