Agua de Valencia is a cult drink in the Spanish coastal city, originating from a creation of the legendary Café Madrid in the heart of Valencia. Since Valencia is one of the largest orange growing regions in Spain and proudly claims to produce the best oranges in the world, the cocktail contains mainly orange juice. There is also Cava, a bottle-aged sparkling wine from Catalonia. To give the drink that certain something and a touch of festivity, spike it with vodka and gin. Agua de Valencia is a sparkling, fresh summer drink that transports you to the sunny beaches of Spain with just one sip.
Why are we telling you this? Because Freigeist Bierkultur, in collaboration with Pirate Brew Berlin and Yria Cervezas, has made a beer that not only has the same name as the Spanish cocktail, but also has a similar taste. Freigeist's creation also bears the suffix "Brut", which is borrowed from the world of champagne and denotes a drink that is unsweetened and particularly dry. Beers with the word “Brut” in the title differ from their traditional counterparts primarily because of their long maturation. Like champagne, the beer undergoes a second phase of maturation in the bottle after the first maturation. Added wine yeast supports the process and gives the beer additional alcohol and a distinctive taste.
The cloudy, sunny yellow beer smells wonderfully of orange as soon as it is opened. On the tongue, the fruity, juicy orange flavor is complemented by delicate caramel malt tones. You can also taste interesting juniper notes, which are an exciting counterpart to the gin in Agua de Valencia and round off the homage to the Spanish classic.
