With their creation Smoaked, the brewers from Freigeist Bierkultur indulge their passion for reviving forgotten beer styles and, together with their friends from the Daubringer Hällche brewery, are helping to bring the Grätzer back to life.
The Grätzer is also called Grodzisz or Grodziskie. This is because the beer originally comes from the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski, which in between was called Graetz. The traditional type of beer is essentially a classic wheat beer. However, this is made exclusively with wheat malt. And although you don’t see it from the golden color of the beer, the wheat malt is smoked over oak before use. The light smoked beer was not brewed for many years or only very rarely until it was revived in 2015. With Smoaked by Freigeist Bierkultur, it is currently attracting attention again on the beer market.
The Polish beer specialty flows into the glass in a pale gold tone and exudes a fine smoke aroma. Delicate fruit notes join the scent of campfire and smoldering wood. The attack reveals a light-footed body that caresses the palate with an interesting blend of hoppy bitterness, smoke flavors, fruity pear and sour citrus notes, and spicy hay. The combination of smoky character and fruity acidity creates an elegant beer with refreshing properties and a unique taste.
