The beer was in open vats and when it came into contact with the cold mist, it gave off a lot of thick, white steam - the name Steam Beer was born.
Nowadays, you no longer have to climb onto San Fran's foggy rooftops to make a steam beer; the process has been professionalized and tailored to modern brewing facilities. Anchor Brewery has patented the name Steam Beer and is proud to brew America's original Steam Beer.
