Powder snow is a phenomenon that will be particularly familiar to skiers and snowboarders among you. In ideal weather conditions at high altitudes, snow falls through cold air at a slightly higher temperature and essentially freezes into individual, uniform flakes. These fall onto the frozen ground and form a loose, dry layer that provides the best surface for all kinds of winter sports. On days with powder snow you can glide down the slope as if on clouds and the wild ride on boards is particularly fun.
Even though Sierra Nevada Brewery hails from sunny California, they still appreciate the powder. So much so that their latest creation is called this: Powder Day is a double cold hopped India Pale Ale, whose wintry name is inspired by glorious days on the slopes and the use of a very special ingredient. Beer contains not only conventional hops, but also so-called lupulin. Lupulin sticks to the hop flower in the form of yellow particles and is the magical substance that gives all brews their wonderful taste. It can be found on dried hop cones, but has recently also been sold as a stand-alone powder.
Powder Day contains a considerable amount of the raw material and conjures up whole truckloads of citrus, mango, pineapple and stone fruit notes in the IPA.
