Craft beer is artisanal beer, the raw materials of which have been selected with the utmost care and processed into delicious brews with masterful skill. This procedure has been a tradition in Franconia for thousands of years, so it is not surprising that Franconian classics are now also conquering the world of craft beer.
One example is the Helle Doppelbock from Abita: The brewery from Covington in Louisiana has a fine selection of great craft beers in its range and one of them is Andygator. The strong strong beer is made from Pilsner malt, German lager yeast and Perle hops and is based on the brewing products of southern Germany. The American interpretation mixes the soft, sweet malt character of a bock beer with the fruity variety and pointed, dry bitterness of some India Pale Ales. At the end there is a deep golden beer with an impressive head of foam and a clear, shiny body. A symphony of malt and toffee rises in the nose, the sip follows quickly and scores with a silky texture and an abundance of grain notes. The sun-ripened grain is soon joined by spicy honey accents, oven-fresh bread and caramel. The hops contribute a lemony fruitiness and delicate hints of grass. The accompanying bitterness is also due to the green gold. The beer enjoyment leads to a dry, crisp, bitter finish that leaves you thirsty for the next bottle.
