This fine drop from Hofstetten is named after an old type of grain: Heine’s Haisa is a traditional type of barley that was cultivated in Austria centuries ago. In 2009, the brewery from the Mühlviertel received different types of malting barley and cultivated them in cooperation with the Bio Competence Center Schlägl and their organic farmers. Under the strict guidelines of controlled organic farming, the grain grew and thrived, and the team of brewers and farmers were able to make important observations. The Heine Heisa variety flourished particularly well in the region’s nutrient-poor soils and was therefore selected for the creation of a beer. However, in order to significantly influence the taste, the barley had to be malted according to the traditional model. The hops and the brewery were also adapted as far as possible to the conditions of the traditional old camp.
After all this preparation, the Alte Lager is now being brewed with Heine’s Haisa barley in the brewery’s historic brewhouse. The taste of the fine brew is based on the bread beer that was drunk everywhere in post-war Austria. A scent of freshly harvested cucumbers rises from the delicate cloudy gold, the initial taste reveals a composition reminiscent of crusty bread with butter, fragrant straw and sun-kissed grain.
