The contrast between fire and ice is a phenomenon that has fascinated mankind for thousands of years. Sitting in front of a crackling fireplace or campfire, we can hardly take our eyes off the dancing flames and let ourselves be hypnotized by their captivating appearance. The dry heat comfortably warms our bones, but we still feel the danger that fire can pose at all times. And ice also has a magical attraction for us: no sooner have puddles, lakes and ponds frozen than the first people dare to step onto their mirror-smooth surface. We slide with joy over ice surfaces, break thinner layers with a wonderful clatter and can’t keep our fingers off magnificent icicles.
A magical combination of cold and heat is the granite block EIS from Hofstetten. The basis of the Eisbock is the Granitbock , a very special strong beer. The popular classic is brewed in the historic brewhouse from 1929. Its special feature lies in the hot granite stones, which are dipped into the beer after the brewing process and caramelize the contained sugar. The noble drop is then stored for half a year. In order to turn this culinary delight into an Eisbock, the brewers subject it to a cold treatment. At extremely low temperatures, the water in the beer freezes and is skimmed off. What remains is the rich essence, which tastes of creamy caramel, roasted malt, sage, rosemary and mint.
