The basis of this beer specialty is the Shanco Dubh Porter from the Brehon Brewhouse in Ireland. The Porter is a mahogany-colored beer specialty with wonderfully dark aromas and strong roasted notes.
To top off their already delicious creation, the brewers decided to do a little experiment: Instead of bottles, the finished porter was filled into old whiskey barrels and placed in the cellar for storage. As a rule, Shanco Dubh matures in the bottle, now it can develop into all its glory dressed in aromatic wood. The wooden barrels have been used for years to produce whiskey and in this process have taken on the fine aroma of the fine wine.
The barrel-aged version of the Shanco Dubh Porter presents itself in a deep black mahogany tone in the glass and is crowned by a small amount of creamy foam. The gentle carbonic acid sends fine pearls from the bottom of the glass to the surface, revealing the wonderfully strong scent. Roasted malt meets soft caramel and delicately spicy whiskey on the nose. The tongue reveals a full-bodied body with a velvety mouthfeel and a cornucopia of dark aromas. Delicately melting chocolate, candied red fruits, roasted malt and heavy liqueur caress the palate. A touch of vanilla and the unmistakable taste that the oak barrel leaves behind complete the play of aromas. The finish is crisply bitter and perfectly complements the sweet weight of the body.
