According to the brewery’s own information, Two Captains is Norway’s best-selling Double India Pale Ale. This is largely due to the great taste of the beer, but the story behind it could also contribute to the beer’s success.
Two Captains comes from the pen of two hop-crazy brewers who, besides brewing, also pursue another impressive activity. Jan Halvor Fjeld is a passionate homebrewer, Kjetil Jikiun is a full-time brewer and hopead. Both men are not only dedicated to brewing, but also to flying. Fjeld is the captain of an airline and Jikiun can also fly a machine. This grandiose coincidence led the two to a collaboration that bears the aptly named Two Captains.
The Double IPA pays homage to the legendary DIPA Pliny the Elder from the Russian River Brewing Company. Gaius Plinius Secundus is one of the first people to be associated with the hops plant and the Northern California brewery Russian River has dedicated a beer to the venerable man. Two Captains, on the other hand, honors this wonderful beer and is an absolutely successful DIPA itself. The beer is characterized by its wonderfully dry character and the fine bitterness, which runs like a red thread through the enjoyment of beer. A balance of fruity, spicy hops and soft malt forms the flavor structure.
