Skyscraper is a very special beer specialty from Nøgne Ø: The powerful Belgian Quadrupel matured in wine barrels for as much as 20 months after the completion of the brewing process. In the world of aroma-rich, barrel-aged beers, there is no rule as to how long the beer should be stored, but the storage period usually does not exceed six months. Barrel maturation is an expensive process and in normal brewing operations very few brewers can give their beers that much storage time. The team at Nøgne Ø opted for extensive maturation and was rewarded with a tasty masterpiece.
The barrels used for storage were previously home to wines made from the Zinfandel grape variety. A good percentage of these dark grapes are grown on the sunny slopes of California, as are the fruits that give the Skyscraper barrels their full-bodied aroma. The Zinfandel grape is characterized by its high sugar content and provides a deep red color as well as the finest notes of blackberries, anise and black pepper. These special aromas harmonize wonderfully with the character of the quadruple, which presents notes of freshly picked berries, heavy red wine and winter spices in both the smell and taste.
The Belgian classic with a Norwegian twist is a flatterer with a warming 14.0% alcohol content and a luxurious variety of flavors.
