Lithuania is known for its down-to-earth cuisine: potatoes, meat, grains and sour cream are the basic ingredients of many dishes. Dumplings, pancakes, bread and potatoes with dill are popular dishes that find their way onto the plate at every meal. If you want something more unusual than that, Lithuanian chefs like to use beetroot: šaltibarščiai is a cold beetroot soup that is eaten on all sorts of occasions in Lithuania. When it's particularly hot outside, for example, or when you've turned night into day and downed one or two beers. In Lithuania, people swear by the hangover-relieving effects of the healthy tuber, and the bright pink soup brightens up every table.
Why are we telling you this? Our favorite brewery Sakiškių alus from Lithuania took šaltibarščiai as inspiration and created a suitable beer. In addition to the usual suspects, a considerable amount of beetroot juice went into the kettle for the Sour Beetroot Ale. This not only ensures a wonderfully deep red color, but also the characteristic taste.
As expected, the Sour Beetroot Ale flows into the glass in a deep shade of red and forms a pink head of foam. When you open the bottle, you can't deny the beetroot: earthy and unmistakable, its aroma tickles your nose. And the beetroot runs like a common thread through the entire drinking experience. From the scent at the beginning to the initial taste and the aftertaste, the tuber is always present and ensures an unusual beer taste. A gentle citrus note and a bitterness that increases toward the finish underline the strong, characterful taste.
