Hungary is a country of many specialties. Goulash and langós are some of the best known, but the country’s cuisine has a lot more to offer. Among other things, for example, the right drinks to go with the hearty, strong dishes: Grapes thrive wonderfully on the sunny slopes of the country and the hops also grow well. In Hungary, therefore, both great wine and outstanding beer are produced.
The Budapest brewery Horizont has created a beer in honor of Hungarian cuisine that combines both worlds: Their Night Shift Strong Dark Red Wine is a Belgian Dark Strong Ale that was stored in oak barrels for refinement. These aromatic barrels previously housed the finest red wine from the Bock winery. The family business from the Villány wine region has been cultivating and producing wine for nine generations and is known far beyond the borders of Hungary for its bold, strong and flavorful creations. For the Night Shift project, however, they did not contribute any wines, just the emptied barrels. In them, the Belgian strong beer matures to its full splendor and also gains flavor nuances, complexity and depth.
The result is a voluminous beer with a delicately melting taste, an enchantingly soft, almost creamy mouthfeel and a luxurious variety of intense dark aromas.
