Sometimes there’s nothing better than a cool, freshly tapped wheat beer. We love the full-bodied flavor, the balance of creamy banana, tangy lemon, and smooth grain, and the richness of this beer style. However, the latter is often a problem: The power of wheat beer comes with a substantial alcohol content and a lot of calories – not always what you need unless it’s Sunday and you have no other plans.
For this reason, the Ayinger private brewery has devised a slim version of its classic wheat beer : The Leichte Bräuweisse has 40% less alcohol and only a fraction of the calories of its predecessor. Despite all the reduction, however, strict care was taken to ensure no flavor was lost. This top-fermented delicacy brings a feather-light 3.2% alcohol content and a maximum of rustic wheat beer character to the glass. Instead of removing the alcohol afterward – a crude process that often results in a significant loss of flavor – the fermentable sugar in the mash is reduced to such an extent that the yeast can no longer produce more than the desired alcohol content.
The Aying brewmaster’s favorite beer flows into the glass a rich golden brown, tinged with thick yeast veils, and crowned with a lush head of thick, white foam. Its flavor delivers everything we love: ripe banana, caramel, clove, gently roasted malt, and a hint of citrus zest. Delicious!
