The Hamburg-based Buddelship brewery has been pursuing a two-pronged strategy for several years: They’ve built a stable core range of modern interpretations of classics and timeless craft beers, while also working on a passion project. In addition to the hectic brewery operations, the team has also set up a farm: Lost Horizon Farm, which combines the certified organic cultivation of grains, fruit, and all kinds of greens with a small farmhouse brewery under one roof. Here, distilling takes place, traditional brewing is done using a coolship, and experiments are carried out with wild yeasts and barrel aging. Some of the brews in this series take years to complete and are presented in elegant champagne bottles with real corks.
Lost Horizon Farm Kamchatka was bottled in spring 2020 and is now finally available. This brew is inspired by Belgian lambic: a barrel-aged 2018 brew was blended with a 2019 brew and then aged on a bed of fresh blue honeysuckle (also known as Katchatka honeysuckle). The cobalt-colored berries were harvested in Brandenburg and have a flavor reminiscent of blueberries and raspberries. Over the course of the long aging process, they give the beer its beautiful berry red color and a wonderfully fruity aroma. The summery sweetness is balanced by elegant fruit acidity, while the barrel aging contributes woody undertones and a vanilla spiciness.
