The craft beer movement has enriched the beer market with all kinds of unconventional creations. Previously, the ingredients were mostly limited to water, malt, hops and yeast, but now there are brews with all kinds of crazy ingredients and the brewing styles have also multiplied. Traditionalists may be critical of this development, but we are happy about the imaginative, flavorful and varied new brews. One trend that has emerged in this context is the marriage of beer and wine. Countless hybrids, beers stored in wine barrels and brews made with must or grapes populate the scene and captivate both beer and wine fans.
One of these extremely interesting specialties comes from Freigeist Bierkultur. Bacchanalia Riesling 2017 was created in collaboration with the Bulgarian brewery Beer Bastards. The spontaneously fermented ale brings a lively 6.0% alcohol content to the glass and is based on a brew with barley and wheat malt, which has been mixed with must from the Riesling grape variety and matured in French wine barrels. The elegant mixture of beer and wine presents itself in the glass in the pale golden color of naturally cloudy apple juice and shows hardly any foam. A fine scent of ripe grapes rises to the nose and is a good preview of the taste: Bacchanalia Riesling 2017 tastes predominantly of white grapes, which mix with light wine, funky yeast and gentle grain on the palate.
