The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has built up such a good reputation over its eight centuries that the demand for good beer has long since exceeded the capacity of a single brewery. Today, work is carried out at four different locations, each of which has historical relevance and has been integrated into the beer empire over the last 40 years.
The Holzkirchner Oberbräu is one of these locations and looks back on a history spanning more than 400 years. In 1605, the brewery was granted brewing rights by the Abbot of Tegernseer and has been brewing down-to-earth beer with great success ever since. The company was bought by the König Ludwig Schloßbrauerei in 2007 and now functions as a brewing and logistics center. Various beer specialties are produced in Holzkirchen, including the 1605er Weisse, which commemorates the significant year in which the brewery was granted brewing rights.
The hearty wheat beer flows into the glass in a rich corn gold and is crowned with a blossom-white crown of fluffy foam. After the sediment has been swirled and poured, a strong veil of yeast permeates the beer. A mild grain scent rises to the nose and tickles the olfactory nerves with notes of ripe banana, spicy yeast and a hint of roasted nuts. The taste profile follows the same pattern and brings a successful combination of dried apricot, soft malt, grippy yeast, oven-fresh banana bread and delicate citrus fruit to the tongue. Wonderful!
