Artist Wilhelm Schlote looks back on an eventful life: After graduating from high school, he studied and taught art, then moved to Paris, exhibited in well-known museums, published numerous children’s books, worked as an illustrator, poster artist and cartoonist, was published many times and won renowned prizes awarded and finally ended up in Cologne. One day during one of his walks through his Veedel Sülz he met the dachshund Waldi. Waldi is the mascot of the Sülzer brewery Lieber Waldi and has led the artist directly to the source of good beer.
Schlote is known for his abstract style and affectionately calls his drawings “Krickelkrakel”. Despite his good education and long and successful career, he is not above using simple stick figures and enjoys working with wax crayons. As part of a collaboration with Lieber Waldi, he designed four different labels that show Waldi the dachshund enjoying beer in a variety of locations.
Behind the ingenious designs is Colorful Waldi, a juicy double IPA brewed with three types of grains and three types of hops. Barley and wheat malt as well as a handful of oats give the beer its velvety soft texture, while the hops Nugget T90, Columbus BBC and Chinook BBC contribute a tropical fruitiness and a powerful bitterness.
