In Memmelsdorf in Franconia, there are various events throughout the year, but the undisputed highlight of the calendar is the Kirchweih. In the local dialect, this event is affectionately called Kerwa and usually consists of four days of celebration. Kirchweih traditions include setting up the Kirchweih tree, music and dancing, a white sausage breakfast, Schlachtschüssel (a hearty dish consisting of various pieces of meat, sausages and offal and served with sauerkraut and dumplings) and the tapping of a festival beer brewed especially for the occasion by the mayor of the municipality. Just in time for the festivities in August, the team has come up with a delicious Festmärz beer this year. The brew has a celebratory 5.6% alcohol content and is presented in a shiny, crystal-clear old gold. An airy crown of white foam sits on top of the beer and smells enticingly of sun-ripened grain and a hint of bitter hops. The first sip follows this olfactory harmony and scores with beautiful spiciness, diverse malt nuances and a hoppy finish.
