Even if there are rock cellars in other parts of the world, they are usually associated with Franconia. The Franconian hills and mountains are criss-crossed by rock cellars that were once carved into the hard stone to store food. In the rock there is a natural temperature all year round, which as a rule does not exceed twelve degrees. This makes these cellars the perfect place to store perishable food or beer.
In Franconia, the rock cellars are largely responsible for the design of the pleasure landscape: the first restaurants were built around the rock cellars early on. The term “beer cellar” goes back to this development. People flocked to the rock cellars from near and far to enjoy the beer stored there with a hearty snack. To this day, breweries in Franconia use the low temperatures underground and store their beer in rock cellars.
The rock cellar is therefore a valuable element of the Franconian beer culture. The guys from the Nürnbier brewery recognized this and dedicated a beer to the Felsenkeller cultural asset. Brewed in the Franconian town of Hallerndorf, the cellar beer comes from the heart of Franconia and tastes like this: With a malty and down-to-earth base, Felsenkeller is not only a homage to the iconic deposit, but also to the beer that has been stored there for centuries.
