Hardly any brewery can offer its brews such fantastic storage conditions as Vulkan from the Eifel: Their beer cellar is 30 meters underground and scores points with its constant temperature and ideal atmosphere all year round. A volcanic eruption thousands of years ago formed the chamber below the brewery, to which just over 150 steps lead down today.
To make the most of this gift from nature, the brewery is working on a range of barrel-aged specialties. These beers are specially designed for long storage times and are filled into wooden barrels after the brewing process has been completed. There they then mature to their full glory. And because the barrels usually previously contained spirits or wine, there is a lot of flavor in the wood, which passes into the brew as it matures.
Part of this series, for example, is the Rum Barrel Barley Wine. This strong beer was stored in rum barrels from Jamaica and, in addition to the impressive 11.5% alcohol content, brings a wealth of aromas into the glass. Notes of tropical fruit combine with fruity sweetness, hints of roasted coconut, rum-pickled raisins and creamy caramel to create a complex culinary delight that goes wonderfully with hearty and powerfully sweet dishes. Our favorite is an oven-fresh brownie with a scoop of Malaga ice cream, a dollop of cream and a handful of chopped, caramelized nuts.
