For their fine Red Lager, brewer Christoph from Flessa Bräu in Berlin opted for a noble aromatic hop. The Mandarina Bavaria variety is a relatively new breed introduced in 2012. In contrast to older plant families, Mandarina Bavaria was adapted to the needs and wishes of brewers and was specially designed for the production of craft beer. The variety is a daughter of Cascade hops and delivers core aromas that range from tangerine to orange and gooseberry to strawberry. The most dominant are the citrus elements, which the Flessa team skillfully elicits from the exquisite hops.
The Red Lager with a sparkling touch presents itself in a copper-red fawn color in the glass and piles up a high head of foam. A wonderful mixture of roasted malt, still green hazelnuts, fragrant hay and caramelized grain fills the air. The beer sends some citrus-fresh hints afterwards, which ultimately seduce you to a drink. The taste test reveals an intense body that is both delicate and subtle. Before the bitterness sets in at the end of the beer indulgence, Flessa’s Red Lager Mandarina fires a volley of zesty citrus delight that’s really fun paired with tropical fruit and malty undertones. The crowning finale plays soft caramel and a harmonious bitterness.
