Brewer’s Gold is a hop variety that is considered somewhat old-fashioned in the modern world of craft beer. It comes from the United Kingdom and was developed by hop breeder Ernest Stanley Salmon in 1919. The variety is a descendant of a wild hop that was found in Manitoba, Canada. Initially, the green gold enjoyed great popularity, but even then the beer business was subject to a fast-moving rhythm and trends were over as suddenly as they came. Some of the most popular varieties today can be traced back to Brewer’s Gold, including favorites of the craft beer scene such as Centennial and Nugget. But not everyone has turned their back on the classic: the Sauerland brewery Warsteiner has even dedicated its own beer to it.
Brewers Gold from Warsteiner is a hearty country beer that combines the elegant bitterness, warm spiciness and currant notes of the hops with full-bodied malt.
The brew presents itself in a delicately clouded old gold in the glass and is crowned with a hand’s breadth of ivory-colored foam. While the aroma mainly has hints of oven-fresh bread, the taste is much more varied. Strongly roasted malt combines with creamy caramel, freshly mown grass, spicy yeast and crispy bread crust to create a sensual pleasure. A hint of berries and a noble bitterness round off the profile harmoniously.
