In all likelihood, the “Steam” in the name comes from San Francisco. Due to the lack of cooling options, the beer here used to be cooled on the roofs of houses in the typical local fog. The beer was in open vats and when it came into contact with the cold mist, it gave off a lot of thick, white steam - the name Steam Beer was born.

Nowadays, you no longer have to climb onto San Fran's foggy rooftops to make a steam beer; the process has been professionalized and tailored to modern brewing facilities. Anchor Brewery has patented the name Steam Beer and is proud to brew America's original Steam Beer.
