The Rodenbach brewery recently launched a series that breathes new life into the classics in its range. Under the working title "Evolved", the team is releasing new interpretations of the most popular beers in the core range. In the process, the brewmasters take a close look at the brews and see how they can give them the finishing touches by aging them in barrels. One of these brews is St. Georges, a Gueuze that was brewed until the 1970s and is based on an ancient recipe. At some point the brew may go out of fashion, but now it is experiencing a renaissance thanks to the new edition.
The basis is a fruity, fresh beer that is similar to a pale ale, but has significantly more acidity. Several brews are combined to create a single one, resulting in an incomparable depth of flavor. After the brewing process is complete, the barley juice is placed in a wooden barrel for an incredible two years, where it matures into a special specialty with a well-rounded character.
Evolved St. Georges presents itself in a shimmering red-gold amber tone in the glass and forms a fleeting veil of white foam. A wonderful scent of ripe apples and sun-kissed peaches fills the room. The first sip follows this fine first impression and delivers sweet fruit, dried apricot, fruity acidity, leather, vanilla and earthy wood notes. Complex and extremely charming!
