Kriek is a Belgian beer specialty that is one of the lambic beers. These beers are traditionally spontaneously fermented: instead of adding cultivated yeast to the brew, the beer is exposed to the yeasts contained in the air. This technique is much more unpredictable than traditional beer production, but is rewarded with a special flavor profile. Lambics have a dry character made up of wine-like notes and a fruity acidity. The Kriek is a subspecies of this category and is brewed with sour cherries.
The true experts when it comes to Kriek are the brewers from Boon: the brewery has a real pioneering role in the Belgian beer scene and is partly responsible for the fact that Belgian beers are drunk all over the world today. Their Oude Kriek is a cut of young lambic and old aged at 400 grams of cherries per liter. The marriage of fresh and mature beer gives the brew a nice depth and combines liveliness and complexity into a delicious whole.
Oude Kriek is spontaneously fermented and undergoes further fermentation in the bottle. The result is deep red and has a creamy, fine-pored head of foam in a delicate pink. A dominant cherry scent transitions into a round cherry flavor. The Lambic combines the aroma of freshly harvested cherries with a wonderfully dry acidity.
