This beer was originally brewed for Russian tsars and gourmets. In order to survive the long ship journey to distant Russia unscathed in all weather conditions, a robust, strong beer was brewed. However, the Imperial Stout was not only enjoyed by the Russian upper class and was soon being shipped all over the world.

What hasn’t changed since stout’s early days is the way it’s made. The beer is still fermented in the so-called Yorkshire Squares. These special stone vats have been used to brew beer for more than 200 years and are the pride and joy of the Samuel Smith Brewery. They also give the stout its very special character and make the beer a truly English specialty.

The Imperial Stout flows into the glass in the deep dark color of delicious dark chocolate and is crowned by a small layer of hazelnut brown foam. A potpourri of dark notes rises from the fine-pored foam: roasted malt, freshly brewed coffee, bitter chocolate and peat mix in the nose to create a tempting scent. The initial taste reveals a medium-weight body with pleasant carbonation and a complex taste. Rich aromas of heavy chocolate cake, fine cocoa powder and roasted coffee caress the palate. A hint of dark fruit and a subtle acidity complement the play of aromas.

Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout is a classic stout that will appeal to anyone who enjoys drinking aromatic, full-bodied beers. Excellent!
