Buckie is the colloquial abbreviation for Buckfast Tonic Wine. This drink originated with the Benedictine monks of Buckfast Abbey in Devon and is a fortified wine unlike any other. It’s based on the Spanish dessert wine Mistela, which is infused with mysterious ingredients. One of these mysterious additions is caffeine. The flavor profile is somewhere between cherry cola, vermouth, blackcurrant, and cough syrup. In Scotland, Buckie has a somewhat disreputable reputation, primarily because it’s consumed by young people from poorer areas and is often associated with hooliganism and crime. Nevertheless, this unusual concoction has established itself as a true cult drink.
The Scottish brewery Vault City has created a beery tribute to Buckie: their Wee Buckie Blackberry Sesh Starter. This interpretation contains not only hops, malt, and yeast, but also blackberries, lactose, and caffeine powder.
Wee Buckie pours an opaque berry red into the glass, forming a small head of foam. A spicy aroma mingles with blackberry notes. The flavor profile comprises blackberry jam, wild berries, cola, and a hint of cough syrup. A crisp acidity balances the sweetness. Besides its 4.5% alcohol content, this beer also delivers a powerful caffeine kick. So, if you need a pick-me-up for your next night out, Wee Buckie is the perfect choice!
