Philip Warburton Oland is a key figure in the history of Moosehead Brewery. His family has run the Moosehead Breweries for several generations and his passion for barley juice was practically born in his cradle. Born in Canada, he studied chemistry before leaving the country to learn the craft of brewing and malting in Copenhagen and England. In 1932 he followed in Susannah Oland’s footsteps and became head brewer in the family business. He created the Alpine Lager, a European-inspired beer that became an absolute crowd favorite.

Today, Oland’s descendants are at the helm of the brewery and honor their forefather with a beer-based homage: The Small Batch PW’s Czech Pilsner is a modern interpretation of Philips Alpine Lager and a monument to the master brewer.

The brew is released in a limited edition in the Small Batch series and brings a mild 4.7% alcohol content to the table. In the glass, the brew presents itself in a strong grain gold with a generous, airy head of foam. A grassy hop aroma rises to the nose and the initial taste is the same: dry notes of freshly mown grass meet noble hop notes, soft grain and fruity hints. An elegant bitterness gives the modern Czech Pilsner the finishing touch.
