Although ginger beer has beer in its name, it does not fall into the same category. It is believed that ginger beer was given this title because it is fermented in a similar way to beer. The spicy drink is made from water, sugar, ginger, lemons and yeast and has little to no alcohol content, depending on the length of fermentation. In its early days in the 18th century, things were a little different: using various yeast fungi and with a lot of patience, stronger ginger beer was produced that had an alcohol content of up to 11%.
The Espiga brewery from Sant Llorenç d’Hortons Alt Penedès in Spain has also tried its hand at making a ginger beer. However, their version has no alcohol at all and is more of a summer refreshment than an intoxicant. Espiga’s ginger beer is made from just four ingredients: water is the base, lemons from regional, controlled organic farming provide fresh acidity, the ginger plays the aromatic main role and cane sugar provides the sweetness, which elegantly balances the spiciness and flavor of the ginger root. The soft drink is gluten-free and alcohol-free - perfect for allergy sufferers and people who avoid alcohol.
