At first glance, beer and juice have little in common: while one contains alcohol and usually no fruit, the other consists entirely of fruit and rarely has an alcohol content. Beer is mostly bitter and based on water, malt, hops, and yeast, while juice is pressed from apples, oranges, cherries, and other fruits and is largely sweet. The craft beer scene is blurring the lines, presenting us with creations that combine the best of both worlds: robust brews with a smoothie-like texture, exuberantly fruity aromas, and fruit on the ingredient list. India Pale Ales, in particular, often have "juicy" in their name and deliver on that promise. These brews are modern cocktails that combine the robust bitterness of beer with the playful fruit sweetness of freshly squeezed juice.
One of these contemporary creations is Tasty Juice from Lervig. The Norwegian brewery presents us with a Double Dry-Hopped Citra IPA that delivers an explosion of tropical notes to the palate. While a blend of barley, oats, and wheat provides a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, the Citra hops deliver an intense interplay of mango, peach, grapefruit, and lemon. The robust 6.0% ABV gives this DIPA the perfect finishing touch.
Tasty juice indeed!
