The Swedish brewery Smögenbryggar´n is located in a location surrounded by water. Many residents earn their living from fishing and the sea supplies them not only with fish and seafood, but also with all kinds of different algae. The algae can be used to make fertilizer or cosmetics, but can also be used for cooking and baking. Or for brewing: The Smögenbryggar’n team works with Nordic Seafarm and brews beers that, in addition to hops and malt, contain exciting ingredients such as bladderwrack or sea salt.
Julle, for example, is an amber ale made with bladderwrack and fingerwrack. The brewery uses the algae to draw attention to the treasures of the sea with its beers and to raise awareness of their need for protection in an unconventional way. The unusual extra ingredients have little influence on the taste. The fine malt and the hops used Amarillo, Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin and Pacific Gem make it even more so: the 5.2% strong beer brings an aroma-intensive balance of toasted bread, caramel, warm spices and earthy herbal notes. The only indication of the seaweed used is a hint of saltiness, which skilfully underlines the play of aromas.
