A beer that makes up for giving up almost everything.
Fasting is an integral part of Christian customs and is even older than Christianity itself. Tradition says that the ancient Romans already underwent regular fasting treatments. With a lifestyle of Dionysian excesses, bacchanal drinking bouts and over-indulgence, this was certainly sorely necessary. Christians who loved asceticism abstained from debauchery but adopted fasting. In order not to give up meat completely during this time of deprivation, an exception was introduced: liquids do not break the fast. The resourceful monks then brewed a beer that was so nutritious and strong that it perfectly compensated for the absence of meat and other pleasures.
The fasting beer from the Bamberg Schlenkerla brewery is a particularly fine example of this brewing tradition. It has already been named the best smoked beer in the world and impresses with its wonderful volume and fantastic taste.
The smoky specialty from the cathedral city flows into the glass in the rusty brown color of autumn chestnuts and is crowned by an incredible amount of fine-pored foam. From the creamy, hazelnut-brown head of foam, a seductive aroma of smoke wafts into your nose. Paired with a fine hop note, the smoky scent makes you want to take your first sip. When drunk, the voluminous body is revealed with its wonderfully roasted malt aroma. Strong smoky notes and a crisp bitterness elegantly round off the aromatic play.
Incredibly tasty and so rich that you could actually do without everything else!
