Normally a derby is a tricky affair. It will be as exciting as a good crime thriller when arch-enemies meet in an atmospheric way to fight for honor in an epic battle. The fans are excited as if it were about their own individual happiness. You rarely see men so emotional.
This derby, however, is more of a friendly game: the master brewers from four breweries in the Rhineland met for their very own Rhine derby to join forces to brew a native Rhine beer. The Rhineland in liquid form, so to speak. The teams involved are Duex from Cologne, the Hensen brewery from Mönchengladbach, the 777 brewing project from Voerde-Spellen and Freigeist Bierkultur from Aachener Ecke. A top-class cast that promises great things!
And the result of this extraordinary cooperation is really great: Rheinderby No. 1 is a masterfully composed rye pale ale that does the Rhineland justice. The Rhenish golden boy shines in a magnificent amber in the glass and is crowned by an impressive amount of stable, white foam. A fine scent of herbs, sour fruits and summer flowers makes you excited to take your first sip. This reveals a tasty mixture of strong malt, green, woody herbs and spicy pine resin. A subtle fruitiness gives the grainy base a wonderful lightness, while the hop bitterness that increases towards the finish skilfully rounds off the play of aromas.
A 1a derby!
