Altbier is a beer specialty from Westphalia that is drunk along the Lower Rhine. A sub-genre of this top-fermented brew is Adambier, which is also top-fermented and has a high original wort content. The strong, usually dark and quite rich brew is traditionally bottled after the brewing process is complete and stored for up to 24 months. While this derivative of Altbier was a real hit in the 19th and 20th centuries, it is hardly to be found today.
Some brewers did not want to simply accept this unacceptable situation, so they formed an alliance and brought a brand new interpretation of the classic to the market. The Trio Infernale consists of Freigeist Bierkultur (Stolberg, Rhineland), Gorilla Cervecería Berlin (capital) and Totenhopfen Brauhaus (Luxembourg, capital and country in one) and has given the Adambier a modern twist.
Their contemporary version is called Scare The Mash, brings a powerful 10.0% alcohol content into the glass and flows into it in the color of freshly brewed coffee. The aroma and taste bring a wonderful composition of strongly roasted malt, oven-fresh bread, roasted nuts, fine men's chocolate, espresso and red berries to the nose and palate. A hint of liquorice provides spice, a gentle acidity cushions the powerful sweetness and a hint of smoke harmoniously completes the play of aromas. Fabulous!
