Fans of the Kehrwieder creative brewery are always eagerly awaiting new additions to the SHIPA series. The acronym stands for Single Hop India Pale Ale and includes a whole range of the finest beers, each brewed with just a single hop variety. This may have been normal in the past, but in the age of hopped craft beers, choosing a single hop is actually quite unusual. However, this decision gives the brewers the opportunity to focus fully on this one strain and realize its full potential.
The latest SHIPA version has a powerful 7.5% ABV and is all about the Australian hop variety Eclipse. The green gold from the Yakima Valley was first cultivated in 2004 and has been used by brewers since 2021. On the hop scale, Eclipse is on the fruitier side. The variety is less floral than others, but enriches the play of aromas with fragrant forest and sparkling citrus notes.
A potpourri of sun-kissed citrus fruit, tropical fruits, deep red strawberries, refreshing mint and spicy anise runs like a red thread through the scent and taste of the copper-red beer. A pleasant bitterness that is perfectly matched to the aroma profile and the finely sparkling carbonic acid provide the finishing touch. Like the other SHIPA beers, Eclipse is strictly limited.
