Anyone who has ever drunk a bland, uninteresting, non-alcoholic beer will inevitably ask themselves why the leaner, non-alcoholic counterparts of the traditional brew are often so flat and unattractive. Is alcohol a fundamental component of taste? No. The problem for many non-alcoholic brewers is rather the careless technique used to remove not only the alcohol but also all of its character. It takes a lot of skill and knowledge to gently remove the alcohol from a brew. Fortunately, there has been a lot of technical progress in this area in recent years, so that the once joyless market for non-alcoholic creations now offers a diverse selection of aromatic beers with no alcohol at all.
One of these beers comes from the pen of Kuehn Kunz Rosen: With Unplugged, the Mainz brewery gives us a pale ale with an alcohol content of less than 0.5% that lacks absolutely nothing. The drink is based on three types of barley malt, spelt malt and the hop varieties Magnum, Monroe and Lily and scores with a subtly composed harmony of juicy hops and honey-sweet malt.
Unplugged flows into the glass in gently clouded copper gold and is adorned with an airy head of pure white foam. A balance of sour fruit aromas, floral hops, oven-fresh bread, sun-dried straw and soft, hearty malt enchants the nose and palate.
