The word original comes from the Latin term origo. Origo has three similar meanings: origin, root or source. The definition of original is directly derived from this and includes a work that has remained unchanged since its creation and may even have been the first of its kind. In the context of personality, an original is a person who has his own thoughts and views, who is not influenced by other people’s opinions and who lives his life his own way. In the context of beer, an original is often a brew that has been brewed for generations and is based on an old recipe.
The Weihenstephan brewery has an original in its range that bears this title because it was brewed in the traditional style of a Bavarian Helles. The Helles is a tried and tested brewing style that had its origins in the Spatenbräu of the late 19th century. Following on from this legendary beer, Weihenstephan now brews a Helles that is just as simple, uncomplicated and drinkable as the first of the same name.
The Weihenstephaner Original comes in brilliant gold and is crowned with a lavish cap of snow-white foam. A spicy scent entices you to take the first sip, bringing grainy notes, floral hops and a hint of citrus fruit to the tongue. A gentle bitterness rounds off the taste and creates a finish that leaves you wanting more.
