"Atomic" is a scientific word used to describe things related to atoms or atomic energy. In colloquial usage, it's used to express that something is exceptionally awesome, strong, powerful, or explosive. Sierra Nevada Brewery has appropriated the term to aptly name a particularly fierce brew: Atomic Torpedo is an Imperial IPA that boasts a whopping 9.2% alcohol by volume and a flavor just as powerful.
The brew is a combination of a classic West Coast IPA and a Juicy IPA – a fruit bomb with citrus components, tropical flair, and resinous spice. The explosion on the tongue is thanks to the Cascade, Centennial, Magnum, and Mosaic hops. They also provide the robust 42 bitter units that keep the fruity exuberance in check.
Sierra Nevada's Aromatic Torpedo flows from the can in a foxy copper-gold hue, capped with ivory foam on its clear body. A fresh pine breeze with lemony undertones tickles the nose and whets the appetite. The first sip presents a voluminous beer that flatters the palate with creamy honey, young pine shoots, sun-ripened orange, juicy pineapple, white peach, and a hint of biscuit. The brew strikes the perfect balance between fruity, malty sweetness and crisp bitterness. The alcohol is dangerously well-integrated.
