Mongozo Banana was the foundation for the entire Mongozo series and the first step in a success story that continues to this day.
When Henrique Kabia had to flee his African homeland in 1993, he didn’t have the opportunity to pack many of his belongings. What he did have in his luggage was a beer recipe that his grandparents had used to brew beer. The traditional recipe is based on the brewing art of the Maasai in Kenya and Tanzania and contains bananas as well as water, yeast, hops and malt. What seems strange at first glance turned out to be a real hit: after Mongozo Banana delighted the beer world in 2001, other varieties followed one after the other, bringing the project international fame.
The ball that got everything rolling is a golden brew with a creamy but rather fleeting head and an irresistible smell of freshly baked banana bread. The first sip is tangy, fruity and fresh and shines with a hint of freshly grated lemon peel. As the drink progresses, the banana gains more and more momentum until it finally becomes the dominant flavor component. The powerful sweetness is cushioned by a light acidity.
If you like bananas, you’ll love this beer! And if you want to increase the effect even more, you can combine the beer with banana bread or a portion of jelly bananas.
