Most people who have ever been to Italy or an Italian grocery or liquor store are familiar with limoncello. This lemon liqueur has its roots in southern Italy and is made from fresh lemon peel, high-proof alcohol, and sugar. Although the sun-drenched Amalfi lemon is the undisputed queen of Italian citrus fruits, there are a number of other varieties that can be used to make such a liqueur. Grapefruit, for example, is one example. Its counterpart to limoncello is called pompelmocello, after the Italian word for grapefruit, and is especially delicious when the orange-peeled fruit is used instead of the yellow one.
The Siren Craft Brew brewery may not be from Italy, but they do enjoy a glass of chilled Pompelmocello every now and then – and it was certainly in such a moment that the idea for the beer of the same name was born. Pompelmocello is a Juicy Sour IPA brewed with three different hop varieties and flavored with freshly grated grapefruit zest and the juice of the bittersweet fruit. Lactose lends the brew a luxurious creaminess and velvety sweetness, while hops and grapefruit provide crisp acidity, exuberant fruitiness, and a tart bitterness.
Pompelmocello is an ode to grapefruit and an exquisite treat for all those who are as hopelessly addicted to the apple of paradise as we are.
