Amburana is a tropical hardwood native to South America. It’s nicknamed "Brazilian oak" because, like oak, it’s used in whiskey maturation. Before whiskey distilleries worldwide took notice, it was used in the production of cachaça and other South American spirits. The wood has a unique flavor profile, imparting intense notes of cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, and clove, along with sweet honey notes and hints of coconut. Often, the whiskey is initially matured in oak barrels and only then transferred to amburana barrels for final maturation, as the aroma would otherwise be too dominant.
Breweries often draw inspiration from distilleries, which is why Amburana has also found its way into beer production. Siren Craft Brew from England, for example, uses the unusual wood to give its Imperial Tropical Stout Darth By Caribbean Chocolate Cake a warm, spicy character.
Darth By CCC pours an opaque mahogany brown into the glass, forming a delicate crown of fleeting, hazelnut-brown foam. Its aroma is intoxicatingly rich, with notes of dark caramel, rich cocoa, and a hint of vanilla. The first sip perfectly mirrors this exquisite impression, rolling across the tongue with a sweet intensity: melt-in-the-mouth chocolate, toffee, espresso, roasted grains, and coconut mingle with a whole spectrum of spices. Utterly decadent!
