Demerara was a colony in South America, administered by the Dutch West India Company, then the Dutch state, and finally Great Britain before gaining independence. Sugarcane was and still is cultivated in the region. From this raw material, sugar is extracted, known as Demerara sugar. This raw sugar is not refined during the production process and therefore contains molasses residue, which gives it its deep golden to light brown color. Demerara sugar has a caramel aroma and a greater depth of flavor than conventional table sugar.
Demerara sugar is also one of four sweeteners in the new porter from Emperor’s Brewery. Interceptor’s ingredient list includes honey, lactose, and maple syrup alongside the brown sugar. Oat flakes, cocoa nibs, pecan flavoring, and a generous amount of alcohol complete the list, creating a surprisingly delicious beer for those with a sweet tooth!
Interceptor pours an opaque midnight black into the glass, crowned with a generous amount of dense, hazelnut-brown foam that is rather fleeting. The aroma of freshly baked pecan pie fills the air. The first sip reveals a full-bodied character that caresses the palate with powerful roasted flavors, soft sweetness, and contrasting bitterness. Notes of melt-in-the-mouth chocolate, coffee, honey, maple syrup, fine cocoa, toasted nuts, and biscuit dance on the tongue. The substantial 12.0% alcohol completes the flavor profile with a fiery warmth.
