Although there are now around 330 different hop varieties cultivated in growing regions across the globe, new ones are added every year. Previously unknown wild varieties are discovered, or familiar hops are crossbred to develop new flavor profiles. Mistral is a new hop variety grown in the Alsace region of France. It originates from a breeding program and is a genetic descendant of the Cascade and Strisselspalt varieties. Cascade is a world-renowned aroma hop from the United States, while Strisselspalt is a traditional aroma variety from France. Mistral is suitable for flavoring and bittering, imparting both floral and fruity notes to beer. Its spectrum ranges from citrus, grape, and pear to floral tones and spicy hints like nutmeg.
The Moosehead brewery from Canada puts this fine hop variety in the spotlight with their latest brew in the Small Batch Series: Their Mistral Hop IPA presents us with the many facets of the green gold.
The brew pours into the glass a clear, old-gold color, crowned with a fluffy layer of foam. A composition of sweet tropical fruit, zesty citrus, and floral notes runs like a common thread through the aroma and flavor. 40 IBUs provide a pleasant contrast to the fruity sweetness, while the substantial 6.0% ABV adds a lively touch.
