English Brown Ale is one of the island’s best-known and most popular beer styles. The classic brew has a long tradition and is roughly divided into two categories: the version from the north of England is characterized by its rather dry, roasted malty character, while the specimens from the south are sweeter and more uncomplicated. Both variants share the deep brown body and the wonderfully full-bodied abundance of different malts. The plus of grain in different roasting states gives the brown beer a potpourri of nut and chocolate notes and a non-slip, velvety-soft texture. In contrast to American beer creations, the Brown Ale contains significantly fewer hops and is prepared with special ale yeast from England.
Like many beer styles of bygone times, the English Brown Ale is currently experiencing a small renaissance: craft brewers are taking up the traditional style and catapulting it into the present using the latest brewing technology and unconventional ingredients.
A contemporary take on the British favorite is Espiga’s English Brown Ale. Her version brings a good 6.0% alcohol content into the glass and combines the variety of malt with an extra portion of hops.
