The ArteSants pub is a popular meeting place in Barcelona’s Sants district. Citizens of the city and their guests come and go here, as does the team from the Espiga brewery. The brewers have a close friendship with the bar’s staff and have spent countless legendary evenings there. It was on one of these unforgettable nights that the idea of having a beer together was born.
After some time for discussion and a cold beer or two, the brewery and pub decided to use their creation to build on a tradition from ancient Babylon: more than 4,000 years ago, the inhabitants of the legendary city brewed a type of honey beer, which, according to historical tradition, was given as a gift to newlyweds. Espiga and ArteSants liked this custom and dared to create their own interpretation of the ancient drink.
Their modern version of honey beer is called Queen Beer and is enriched with fine flower honey. The base is a beer made from three types of grain and the Galena hop variety, which flows into the glass in a clear, fawn-brown shimmering gold. A fluffy, soft head of foam rests on top and smells like oven-fresh honey cake. The taste profile is surprisingly dry and consists of creamy honey notes and floral hop notes. A strong 7.0% alcohol content and a gentle bitterness round off the pleasure.
