Barrel aging of beers is a technique that has been around for a long time, but has only really gained in popularity over the last few years. The craft beer movement and all its daring brewers are responsible for this positive development: the guys and girls in the brewhouses are constantly looking for new ways to make their creations even better, more flavorful and more interesting - and storing in wooden barrels is an excellent opportunity to tick off all of these points in one elegant move. Patience is required, but it is worth it. Barrel aging not only ensures that the natural aroma of the brew is deepened, it also enriches it with full-bodied flavor components from the wood and makes the character more complex.

The breweries La Pirata and Atelier Vrai brewed a collaboration brew some time ago, part of which was barrel-aged. Gagat BA is the version of the Russian Imperial Stout stored in a port wine barrel and is even better than the unaged original. The coffee-black brew brings a voluminous 8.7% alcohol content to the glass and balances its powerful sweetness with harmoniously seasoned 30 bitter units. In addition to the dominant note of fine port wine, Gagat BA tastes of toffee, candied red fruit and strongly roasted grain and brings hints of oak to the tongue.
